An automated pH chemical dosing system maintains a wet scrubber’s scrubbing liquor at optimum potency. It injects the required alkaline or acid into the scrubber system.
A chemical dosing system is installed into the wet fume scrubber system. It delivers an appropriate amount of acid or alkaline solution to control and neutralise the pH balance within the fume scrubber’s scrubbing liquor. By measuring, adapting, and monitoring the potency of the scrubbing liquor it keeps it at its optimal concentration.
The pH of the scrubbing liquor is determined by a chemical engineer depending upon the fume scrubber application. APMG Plastics’ experienced engineers can advise on which chemical is suitable. The treatment chemical solutions include alkalines such as Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH).

The automated chemical dosing system typically comprises of a pH meter, dosing pump, pH in-line probe and a sample pipeline integrated within the scrubber’s re-circulation system.
The chemical dosing system pH meter receives data from the in-line pH probe and indicates the system’s pH level via a digital display.
The in-line pH probe detects whether a solution is alkaline or acid and where it registers on the pH scale. It communicates this reading to the automated dosing system, which determines whether the system needs to pump more or less scrubbing liquor to neutralise the gases being scrubbed.
For example, if the pH is set at 12 and the system identifies it has dropped to 10 or below, it will start pumping the chemical in to restore the solution to the correct pH level.
A pH dosing pump typically features a digital interface and is capable of constant or proportional dosing.
The pH controller activates the dosing pump when the pH level of the wet scrubber recirculation liquor drops below the recommended setpoint. This allows scrubbing solution to be pumped into the recirculation tank bringing the liquor pH level back inline to its optimum potency. When this level is reached the pH controller de-activates power to the dosing pump, which in turn interrupts the pumping action. This process automatically repeats as the pH level fluctuates.
The dosing pump is supplied with a chemical injector which is generally fitted into the wall of the scrubber tank or the recirculation pipework. With interconnecting tubing from the pump discharge and the injector, a steady flow of dosing chemicals is pumped into the main scrubber reservoir, neutralising the liquor to optimal levels.
APMG Plastics recommends a solenoid driven dosing pump because they are virtually maintenance free. The pump requires no lubricated bearings or shafts keeping the maintenance costs to a minimum.
To safely house the dosing chemicals, APMG Plastics offers a small plastic carboy and accompanying chemical suction lance with a foot valve, filter, and float switch.
The foot valve and strainer stop any solids build-up from the dosing container entering the system. The float switch alerts if the chemical volume falls below a set level and needs replenishment.
Each chemical dosing system must be calibrated to suit its application and monitored and maintained according to its O&M manual.
Regular testing and servicing will enhance the chemical dosing system’s efficiency and effectiveness. Failure to follow maintenance and calibration standards could compromise safety and environmental safeguards, and result in harm, litigation and penalties.
